The Best Places for Takeout in Downtown Toronto in 2021

The Best Places for Takeout in Downtown Toronto in 2021

With restrictions in Toronto still in place, I have compiled a list of some of the best places for takeout and delivery through apps like Uber Eats ($10 off your first order) in the Downtown core. I try to order takeout directly from the restaurants whenever possible in order to help keep them open for when the city reopens and we can dine in at our old and new favourite places again. Let’s keep the dining scene alive and well in 2021!

The Lucky Penny General Store 189 Shaw St, Toronto, ON M6J 2W7

The Lucky Penny General Store 189 Shaw St, Toronto, ON M6J 2W7

I found this spot on Uber Eats when my fianceé Andrew and I couldn’t decide on what to order for lunch over the weekend. The Lucky Penny General Store appears to be a convenience shop by name, but it offers so many simple and delicious dishes made from the best local suppliers. My favorite items are the Sunrise Breakfast Sandwich made from Brodflour‘s sourdough English muffins., Randy’s Jamaican Beef Patty, The Shaw grilled cheese made with Fred’s cheese bread, and the chocolate croissant from La Bamboche, the sea salt chocolate chip cookie, and the B.L.T. If you have the chance to visit the store which is by Trinity Bellwoods Park, they have a cute takeout window where you can grab and go these food items and more pantry staples.

Flame Sushi 204 Queen St W, Toronto, ON M5V 1Z2

Flame Sushi 204 Queen St W, Toronto, ON M5V 1Z2

Flame Sushi is another business that has bravely opened during the covid pandemic. I picked up the Kani Salad which was a crabmeat salad with lots of delicious crab meat and roe and a tremendous tangy dressing. I also tried the Butterfish Oshi which was a square torch pressed sushi topped with tempura shrimp and torched pink beet mayo sauce topped with butterfish and garlic chips. Such a delicate blend of flavors. Flame sushi is a great takeout option for affordable high quality and inventive sushi.

Bar Poet 1090 Queen St W, Toronto, ON M6J 1H7

Bar Poet 1090 Queen St W, Toronto, ON M6J 1H7

Bar Poet 1090 Queen St W, Toronto, ON M6J 1H7

When Bar Poet opened pre-covid, it was on my list of places to try with friends on a night out. We had walked by many times before when there were huge lineups to get in on a Friday or Saturday night. When I saw that they were offering delivery, I had to try their famous pizza. We ordered the Hot Rod (Pepperoni) and Garlic Fingers and Truffle Hot sauce for dipping. The pepperoni was the type that was small in size and forms a little well of oil, and to me that says enough about this stellar pie. I hope to dive in when everything reopens for the atmosphere to go with this type of comfort food.

Dzo Viet Eatery 308 Dundas St W, Toronto, ON M5T 1G4

Dzo Viet Eatery 308 Dundas St W, Toronto, ON M5T 1G4

I love grilled pork vermicelli with Vietnamese spring rolls. Dzo Viet Eatery opened up in 2020 during the height of covid and won me over with their take on this dish. As an indecisive orderer, I also love the option of adding prawn pops to my dish to try some more from the menu. The decor in the restaurant is very cool and Saigon inspired. I hope to dine in when they reopen to try some of their cocktails.

Saigon Pai 446 Parliament St, Toronto, ON M5A 3A2

Saigon Pai 446 Parliament St, Toronto, ON M5A 3A2

Saigon Pai solves the issues of wanting to eat Thai and Vietnamese food on the same day without compromising the taste of either They have a great grilled pork vermicelli dish with Vietnamese spring roll as well as a delicious Pad Thai all to be washed down with some sweet Thai Iced Tea.

Mel’s Real Good Pizza

Mel's Real Good Pizza Toronto

I found Mel’s Real Good Pizza on Uber Eats when browsing new restaurants. They are delivery only. was surprised that they had such a high rating (4.8), and of course, had to try their pizza. They also offer pizza specials of the day on their Instagram account. I tried the Pepperoni 2.0 which was a daily special with two variants of the pepperoni pizza and Andrew ordered the Mel’s Famous Pizza Alla Vodka. The pizza was so unique. The perfect marriage between Italian and American style pizza. Extremely thin crust with a fluffy crispy crust, and piled with tons of cheese and pepperoni. They also were large in size, where two people could easily share one.

Juicy Dumpling 280 Spadina Ave., Toronto, ON M5T 0A1

Juicy Dumpling 280 Spadina Ave., Toronto, ON M5T 0A1

If you crave a good soup dumpling or pan-fried dumpling in Chinatown this is the spot. Juicy Dumpling is located inside of the iconic Dragon City Mall, through the Dundas St. entrance. My regular orders include the pan-fried juicy pork buns, pan-fried mini soup dumplings, and shrimp wontons with spicy sauce, but you really can’t go wrong with their menu of handmade dumplings.

Pai 18 Duncan St, Toronto, ON M5H 3G8

Pai is a local staple for Thai food fans. When in restaurant dining was available they always had a long waitlist, and now with delivery, there are always delivery drivers lined up outside. I love the Tom Yum Soup, Chef Nuit Pad Thai, Massaman Curry, and Khao Soi. They also used to have my favorite Moo Ping and a peanut chicken satay skewer appetizer, but I don’t see it on the current takeout menu.

Gusto 101 101 Portland St, Toronto, ON M5V 2N3 Gusto 101 101 Portland St, Toronto, ON M5V 2N3

Gusto 101 is a Toronto staple for great Italian food. Their takeout and delivery options mean that we can still indulge in the Kale Salad and Wood Oven Pizzas at home.

Good Korma 689 Queen St E, Toronto, ON M4M 1G6

Good Korma 689 Queen St E, Toronto, ON M4M 1G6

Good Karma has a solid butter chicken dish, vegetable samosas, and naan bread. The butter chicken sauce is super creamy with tender chunks of white meat chicken. The samosas are huge in size and bursting with curry flavour.

Egg Bae 189 Augusta Ave, Toronto, ON M5T 2L4

Egg Bae 189 Augusta Ave, Toronto, ON M5T 2L4

I tried Egg Slut in Las Vegas and was so happy when Egg Bae opened in Toronto offering the same type of running eggy goodness in a sandwich. I love their unique breakfast sandwiches and even learned how to cook eggs the same way because of how much I enjoyed them, but nothing compares to the taste of breakfast when it’s made by someone else.

Duff’s Famous Wings (Little Italy) 558 College St, Toronto, ON M6G 1B1

Duff's Famous Wings (Little Italy) 558 College St, Toronto, ON M6G 1B1

I love Duff’s Wings and have been a loyal customer for over 15 years. I am partial to this location having the best wings consistently, but the Bayview one also serves the same menu. I thought they would never offer delivery, so I am ecstatic when I found them online. I never really liked the bar-type atmosphere of Duff’s, so delivery is a huge improvement for me. The only thing missing in the delivery order is their lollipops. Surprisingly the delivery wings arrive just as crispy as they are when dining in. They are still perfect as can be.

Maker Pizza 59 Cameron St, Toronto, ON M5T 2H1

Maker Pizza 59 Cameron St, Toronto, ON M5T 2H1

Maker Pizza 59 Cameron St, Toronto, ON M5T 2H1

The #1 spot for the best pizza in Toronto. Throughout the years, Maker Pizza always holds the spot for the best pizza in town. It is consistently jaw-droppingly good. I have tried the red and white-based pizzas, but Pepperoni will always be my favorite. I love the chewy texture of the crust and the spicy pepperoni that they use. They also have amazing wings and sell Le Gourmand chocolate chip cookies.

Descendant Detroit Style Pizza 1168 Queen St E, Toronto, ON M4M 1L4

Descendant Detroit Style Pizza 1168 Queen St E, Toronto, ON M4M 1L4

If you love Detroit-style pizza, Descendant Detroit Style Pizza is the original and in my opinion the best place to get your crispy-edged fix.

Ace’s Pizza 26 Duncan St, Toronto, ON M5V 2B8

Ace's Pizza 26 Duncan St, Toronto, ON M5V 2B8

Ace’s Pizza is located inside of Rock ‘n’ Horse Saloon. It is set up for delivery and takeout only with a little makeshift station to pick up your pizzas.

8Mile Detroit Style Pizza 9 Charles St W, Toronto, ON M4Y 1R4

8Mile Detroit Style Pizza 9 Charles St W, Toronto, ON M4Y 1R4

8Mile Detroit Style Pizza is another Detroit-style pizza offering that has opened relatively recently. I loved the pepperoni, however would have preferred a tad less marinara topping.

Illstyl3 Sammies 300 Richmond St W, Toronto, ON M5V 1X2

Illstyl3 Sammies 300 Richmond St W, Toronto, ON M5V 1X2

Illstyl3 Sammies has the best Philly cheesesteaks in Toronto. There is no comparison. I have tried Tony Luke‘s in Philadephia and these are better and you can save yourself the trip to Philly. I also recommend the Chicken Pizza Jawn and Turkey and Cheese Hoagie. These sandwiches are stuffed with meats and cheeses and complementary toppings and made fresh to order. I also love the Illfries which are extra crispy and have a creamy garlic aioli sauce. They are not on Uber Eats, but they have takeout and their own app so that you can order ahead.

Rudy 69 Duncan St, Toronto, ON M5V 2C5

Rudy 69 Duncan St, Toronto, ON M5V 2C5

Rudy is Toronto’s answer to Shake Shack. Great classic cheeseburgers made to order with smashed beef and thick diner-style milkshakes to compliment them.

OMG Oh My Gyro 155 John St, Toronto, ON M5V 2Z5

OMG Oh My Gyro is the only place that we go to for gyro plates and souvlaki chicken plates. The sides are always done perfectly, and the servings are huge. This takeout spot is always busy, so you can count on your meat being fresh. Skip The Halal Guys and go here for the real deal.

Hong Shing Chinese Restaurant195 Dundas St W, Toronto, ON M5G 1C7

Hong Shing Chinese Restaurant195 Dundas St W, Toronto, ON M5G 1C7

Hong Shing Chinese Restaurantis my preferred spot to grab classic Chinese takeout staples like crispy beef, General Tso chicken, sweet and sour pork, ginger and garlic lobster, shrimp wontons, and more. The crispy dishes are generous in portion and arrive crispy, which many Chinese takeout spots miss the mark on for delivery.

Church’s Chicken 1171 St Clair Ave W, Toronto, ON M6E 1B5

Sometimes I have a guilty craving for fried chicken. Church’s Chicken is always my go-to because it always arrives hot and very crispy. They also have the most amazing honey-coated biscuits that put Popeye Chicken’s biscuits to shame.

Robot Boil Seafood 895 Yonge St, Toronto, ON M4W 2H2

Robot Boil Seafood 895 Yonge St, Toronto, ON M4W 2H2

I was first introduced to seafood boils from Captain’s Boil. After many times dining in and ordering delivery from them, we had a few orders that seemed to have too much MSG where we were feeling the side effect. So, I learned how to make my own seafood boil at home. Then, I found Robot Boil Seafood. We ordered the lobster special of the day and shrimps. Both were super tasty and I love the larger size shrimps they use.

Blackbird Baking Co. 172 Baldwin St, Toronto, ON M5T 1L8

This bakery is always very busy, with good reason. Blackbird Baking Co. has a delicious assortment of bread and pastries made in-house daily. I love their sourdough baguette.

Marben 488 Wellington St W, Toronto, ON M5V 1E3

Marben 488 Wellington St W, Toronto, ON M5V 1E3

During covid, Marben has set up a little market with unique pantry items. They sell the best sourdough loaf that I have ever had. If you are lucky, you can even get a loaf piping hot.

Sud Forno 716 Queen St W, Toronto, ON M6J 1E8

Sud Forno 716 Queen St W, Toronto, ON M6J 1E8

For Italian-style bread, Sud Forno has my heart, with an extra crunchy outer layer and sweet fluffy white bread filling.

St Urbain Bagel 93 Front St E #11, Toronto, ON M5E 1C3

I have a frequent craving for a Montreal-style sesame bagel with lox and a heaping of cream cheese. I used to eat these so often as an in-office breakfast. The bagels with lox are amazing at St. Urbain Bagel, and worth the trip to St. Lawrence. I also love grabbing a tub of fresh cream cheese and some bagels to take home and freeze.

Bagels on Fire 426 Queen St W, Toronto, ON M5V 2A7

Bagels on Fire has the best breakfast bagels in Toronto with eggs and bacon oozing with cheese and mayonnaise. The bagels are freshly made from the in-house oven.

Allwyn’s 404 Queen St W, Toronto, ON M5V 2A6

Allwyn's 404 Queen St W, Toronto, ON M5V 2A6

Allwyn’s Bakery makes fresh Jamaican Beef Patties in store. The crust is flakey and the meat filling has just the right level of kick.

Righteous Gelato

I have been buying Righteous Gelato for a while now at Fresh and Wild and Metro when they were called Fiasco Gelato. It is now available on Uber Eats for delivery. It’s my favourite Canadian gelato. I highly recommend the Raspberry Lime, Mango Pineapple, Lemon, and Strawberry Frosé flavours.

Bloomer’s Queen St 715 Queen St W, Toronto, ON M6J 1E6

I never knew the name of this place was Bloomer’s because my eyes have always gravitated to the window display with sweets but had shopped there multiple times for croissants, donuts, carrot cake, and other tasty baked goods. If you want to treat yourself and are in the Queen West area, I would recommend popping in to this little bakery.

Le Gourmand 152 Spadina Ave, Toronto, ON M5V 3S6

Le Gourmand 152 Spadina Ave., Toronto, ON M5V 3S6

Le Gourmand is the perfect place to pick up a warm chocolate cookie or Portuguese Tart as a pick-me-up.

Saving Gigi 859 Bloor St W, Toronto, ON M6G 1M5

Saving Gigi 859 Bloor St W, Toronto, ON M6G 1M5

Aside from some killer coffee, Saving Gigi has a daily assortment of pastries and breakfast sandwiches. The breakfast sandwiches are made with regular or jalapeno cheddar biscuits made fresh in-store. And for pastries, the chocolate chip cookie and scones are to die for.

Aloette 163 Spadina Ave. 1st Floor, Toronto, ON M5V 2A5

I used to love Aloette when it was open. It has superb food mixed with a Soho New York vibe. For takeout, I noticed that there were lots of fun new and more casual menu items. I particularly recommend trying their decadent lemon meringue pie with a giant dollop of meringue and chocolate cake which is like a McCain Deep’n Delicious but for grown ups.

Greenhouse Juice Co. 740 Queen St W, Toronto, ON M6J 1E9

I love doing a one or three-day cleanse every once in a while to reset from all of the eating. It’s important to keep a healthy body, even if we living in sweatpants. Greenhouse Juice Co. makes them so much easier to do because I can actually look forward to the next juice because the flavours are so unique and healthy.
